XVII CENTURY COLLECTIBLES
Also referred to as Coimbra Pottery
In the last century, ceramic societies decided to reproduce 17th century faience pieces that had been exhibited in museums and private collections of the city. Just outside of the city of Coimbra are the Roman ruins named Conimbriga. These ruins were also a source of artistic inspiration for the ceramics produced. These artisans still possess the ancient knowledge to produce the original colors, such as sepia and blue by using ancient substances. The motifs of the Coimbra faience portray hunting scenes, castles, coats of arms, feathers and plumage of exotic birds, outlines of Arabian-influenced backgrounds, and many more.
All of them have such a peculiar effect that they give the faience a typical feature impossible to be mistaken or confused with any other faience.
The decoration is entirely handmade and signed by the artisan, making each piece exclusive and unique.
